The o1d document, granting land to James,is in poss- ession of a descendant living in Medfield. This six acre lot, probably included the site of the house not the possession of a descendant. as the ground thru which it runs is literally paved with stones, and the stream though considerable in winter,almost disappears in summer. It is likely, that this water course was much larger before the forests were cleared away. The brook probably con- tinued till it reached "Home ieadow Brook," forming a well defined boundary along the south western bor- der of the town grant. The land on the other side of this small stream now belonging to the homestead was annexed long afterward. The orchard was purchased from Col. Johnson Mason in the early part of 1800. The pasture was bought fifty or sixty years later. We have no means of knowing what were the dimensions of the farm during the life time of James the Urigin al proprietor. Undoubtedly, it was enlargea fron time to time by additional grants and purchases till it became a good sized farn, though never a very large one. As there was a "cooper shop" standing there in the time of King Phillip's war,we conclude that vames Allen Iollowed the occupation of a cooder. His son Joseph was a cooper. From tradition in the family, it is known that this cooper shop suffered during the Indian wars. The Indians under King Phillip in 1676 on their way Irom warboro to Medfield. The old homestead has been in the uninterrupted possession of the A llens thru seven generations, and descendants still awell there. At the time of one of the annual Allen reunions, one particular room is made the receptacle of sundry heirlooms. A blazing fire of wood is piled upon brass knobed andirons, and the blackened crane,with its pot hooks of varying lengths,and singing tea kettle,with their accompany ing snuffers adorned the shelf; over the mantle hangs a musket bearing the date 1770. An ancient tea-sett,dating back four generations is displayed wooden shelves; Ranged beside it are pewter plates of the ancient house keeper. The Spinning wheel and its accompaniments are brought out. (this was copied from a manuscript by d Allen. This manuscript is in the Library of the Institute American Genealogy in hicago)

O Iord, I've never lived where churches grow; I've loved creation better as it stood That day You finished it, so long ago, And looked upon your work and called it good. Just let me live my lile as I've begun! And give me work that's open to the sky; Make me a partner of the wind and sun, And I won't ask a life that's soft and high.
Clean as the wind that blows behind the rains;
Just keep an eye on all that's done and said; Just right me sometime when I turn aside; ana guide me on the long, dim trail aheaa-- That stretches upward towards the Great Divide. Badger Clark Poet-laureate of South Dakota.
