It was named for the Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Stretlitz In 1784 Its name was changed to Washington,and as the settle- went of the frontier increased, subdivisions took place until the originial county was split up into the above named countios. There was also a Charlotte precinct in butchess County which comprised the present towns of Stanforà, Clinton, and Washington. No one of these locallties would have been near the Delawere River,nor to my knowleage 1s there any Somerset Township In New York State, except in Niagara County. I wonder 'if the land referred to in Enos Mead!s will might not have been in the Charlotte Patent, town of Sunmit, Schoharie County. This land was on the Char- lotte River, and is west of the Delaware as stated in the will. He married 12-24-1809 in Onondaga county New York, to Dolly Thompson who died July 10, 1854, aged 76, buried in the First Ward Cemetery, Syracuse, New York. (The 1st Ward Cem. 18 MEAD Descendants of Mary Mead:Miller (daughter of Israel T. Mead) claim that Mary was born in Indiana near the Ohio line. seems that Israel went to Indians from New York, and then back to 0hio. But so far I have found no record of him in Indiana. Victor Martin Mead (grandson of Israel I.) stated in a letter, that at one time when his (Victor's) father Thompson lived out of Bristol, 0hio, that a first cousin Alva Mead lived in Bristol,and Later about 1880-8,Alv8 lived In New York City where he owned or managed 8 Cigar and Tobacco Store on Park Atenue. Alva collected old songs,and corresponded with Victor M.Mead. After a brief search of Bristol (Irumbull co.) Ohio, 10 records of our Meads were found. I have wondered if Victor might have made a mistake In states and meant Indiana? There is a village named Bristol laid out in the 1830s ....then in 1834, Sydney- established..later on they merged under the name Bristol, in Elkhart county, Indiana. The hunter followed it in, and finally, catching sight of it, fired, but only wounded it. The animal left the swamp and was instantly shot by a young man named Otis Allen. Both men immediately claimed the bear, and finally resorted to blows to establish their claim. Buried in the Day Cemetery in Clarksfield, Ohio. Married Ira Starr, born 1789/91 in Connecticut. He came from New York to Indiana, then to Seneca county, Ohio, and to Clarksfield in 1828, where he bought a farm, then sold it in 1833, and moved across the road, and kept a small store. In 1836, bought seventy five acres, and built a block house, which faced the main road between Clarksfield and New London. Had a tailor shop in one room. He was a tailor by trade. Farm sold in 1840, and he moved to Hayesville, Ohio, where he kept a store with his son in law, Francis Barnes. In his youth he was a post-rider, carrying the mail on horseback. In some way his leg was injured, so that it had to be amputated twice, first below the knee, and then above. This was done without anesthetic, and with only a butcher knife, and a hack saw. After the death of Eliza, he lived with his children, and died at the home of his daughter Mrs Betsy Ann Starr:Twiss, in Kent City, Michigan in 1885, and buried in the Chubbuck Cemetery, about three miles north of Kent City. Descendants claim that Eliza was of Scotch-Irish ancestry. The boy ran an iron poker through the animal's leg, thus holding hin fast. the screans of pain soon brought the neighbors, who clubbed it to death. The Indians searched the sheds, barn,etc. Then came to the house, tryed the doors, looked into all the windows down stairs,then talked it over among them selves for some time. Finally they rode away. Indians dressed in a wild fashion were one of the marauding bands escaped from a reservation. It was a harrowing experience for sons. The two boys never forgot. IThey told me about this.. Peter died 11-11-1814, at Gnadenhutten, Ohio. His grave there has D.A.R. marker. His son Christian F. (whose mother was Maria C. Williams), married Mary Barbara Frey.
