Biography
Ernst’s family booklet tells the story of a German immigrant who made his home near Fremont, Nebraska. It gives his birth as November 11, 1827, and describes an 1851 voyage to New Orleans.
According to the account, he bought a farm southeast of Fremont in 1862 and carried freight between Fremont and Denver. He married Augusta Muller in Fremont on May 24, 1870. The booklet places his death at the family farm on January 7, 1913.
A 1900 census household contains an Ernest Schmidt born in November 1827 and a wife Augusta born in August 1849. The ages and names support this identification; the connection to later generations is shown with its research qualifications.

Mentzinger is the booklet’s spelling; the modern locality has not been established.
The booklet reports immigration in 1851; the 1900 census index reports 1852. The immigration year remains unresolved.
The image shows Ernst and Augusta together, as identified by the surrounding family booklet.
The 1921 biography of the younger Ernest uses Augusta Miller and gives a conflicting age at her death. It reports the older Ernst’s immigration in 1849, compared with 1848 in the later directory. These differences have not been silently reconciled.
